As for the schools, they have to be overly cautious because all hell would break loose if a child died at school or was hospitalized because something could have been done to prevent it. That is why schools have metal detectors and policemen patrolling them. And all sort of "doomsday" plans that will most likely not be need but just in case they are in place. I remember having air raid drills in school, now they have intruder drills and lock down drills. When it comes to children, we as adults protect them fiercely because they can not protect themselves. We do the best we can with the information we have at the time. And yes, that sometimes means we make the wrong decisions. We just have to learn from those mistakes for the future.
